About Course

This course covers the key aspects of Hazard Communication – or HazCom – and shows how a HazCom programme can protect the health and safety of workers using chemicals in US industry. We begin by defining key terms, including OSHA HazCom Standards (HCSs), the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) and the relationship between them. We also present statistics detailing workplace chemical hazards and accidents. You’ll learn about the four main routes by which chemicals can enter the body-Inhalation, Ingestion, Injection, and Eye and Skin Absorption – along with symptoms and how to protect yourself from exposure. The benefits of GHS and the HazCom 2012 update are discussed, along with the responsibilities of employers and employees. Major components of a HazCom program are covered including, the written program, chemical inventory, SDSs, container labelling, employee training and personal protective equipment. We then look in detail at Safety Data Sheets and show how to complete them correctly. Other topics include hazard classification, HazCom labelling, and an in-depth look at hazard pictograms and their role in chemical safety. We also discuss other hazardous chemical labelling systems – the Hazardous Materials Identification System (HMIS) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 704. Finally, we’ll cover employee HazCom training, and HazCom Program Maintenance and Reviews.
