Fire Prevention

This course starts by explaining the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations related to workplace fire prevention. It’ll cover statistics relating to fire injuries and deaths, and examine a case study which influenced much of today’s fire legislation. You’ll learn about the factors necessary for fire to start and spread, and see how the Hierarchy of Controls can be used to eliminate or reduce fire risks. You’ll look at Emergency Action Plans, Fire Prevention Plans and the various types of Evacuation procedure including vertical, vertical phased and horizontal. Individual roles and responsibilities will be explained along with the chain of command that must be established. The course will look in depth at Evacuation Plans, including alarms, escape routes and the use and location of muster points. You’ll learn about firefighting equipment, including fire extinguishers, and how to recognise and use the correct type. There’s practical advice on the handling and storage of flammable liquids and materials – and how to respond if a flammable liquid is spilt. It’ll also look at electrical fires and the hazards associated with hot works, highlighting the common causes, warning signs, and appropriate safety actions to take. Finally, the course will cover why good housekeeping techniques are essential for fire safety – and the importance of training, including test runs and fire drills. The main objective of this course is to make sure you’re prepared to take proper emergency action when necessary and that you play your part in preventing fires and releases of toxic or flammable material spills in the workplace.
